Have you ever seen one of those perpetual motion machines with suspended steel spheres clicking into each other? Newton's Cradle is a mechanized timing game/installation, based on the toy of the same name. Instead of using steel spheres, it uses electrified solenoids that smash into each other when they are actuated. Controlled by a panel of big arcade buttons, players attempt to time the strikes of each solenoid, in order to get the contraptions to swing as far into the air as possible. Though the objective is not to "win," there is some skill involved, and most people can really get the pendulums rapidly swinging and bonking into each other after a few minutes of practice. Newton's Cradle is the first piece in a three part series presented as a Side Street Projects Artist-in-Residence. Pasadena, CA, 2017-2018
